Whilst at school I studied many different martial arts which included judo, kung fu, karate, ju jitsu and kick boxing. I got fed up with these very quickly as I did not find any of these styles offered the all round training that I wanted.

Personal experience spurred me into finding a self defence style that I would enjoy, and was effective.

It was whilst coming home from my then girlfriends house, I had my personal stereo on loud listening to some music; I felt someone grab my shoulder from behind and as I turned around in shock, I was face to face with a  scary looking person, who demanded I should hand over my wallet.

Without thinking I kicked him between the legs as hard as I could and ran away not daring to look back. Later I realised I was running on pure adrenaline. This situation could have been a lot worse than it was, and it was at that point I realised I needed to learn self defence.

Just by chance I stumbled across a Tae Kwon Do class in my local sports centre in Salisbury.

I tried it and from there I knew it was for me; I was definitely hooked and just could not wait until the next lesson. I started training in Tae Kwon Do in 1985 and have been ever since.

As a second degree black belt I opened the Ringwood Tae Kwon Do school on 14th October 1996.  This club started that night with one member and has now developed as a club to over 100 students. As a third degree black belt I opened the second school in Verwood. This was on 14th September 2000. This opening night was a real success with 68 people turning up for the first lesson! The class now has over 80 members. The classes are successful because they are fun to do. I try and teach people with the philosophy. ‘This is how I would like to be taught.’

We are a big family in this area and everyone is part of it from the beginners to the black belts; everyone is treated the same no matter what your age or occupation. When your dobok is on we are all students hungry for more TKD knowledge.

I look forward to teaching every class that I take just as I look forward to every class that I train in.

Long may it continue!

I hope you all enjoy your Tae Kwon Do as half as much as I have!
